Episode Recap
Episode 14 of The Rookie: Feds Season 1 begins with a woman trying to escape from a building. He is able to escape the ropes that tempt him and outwits his guard dog. He goes out the door and runs without looking back.
Elsewhere, Garza is happy for the newbies, Brendon and Simone took the pistol specialty course. He tells them about what kind of agent they want to be and where they see themselves going. Of course, Simone can’t help bragging about how well she’s doing on the course, but Garza is quick to remind her not to be cocky. While on the practice field, the team is surprised to see Candace, Garza’s ex-wife.
Candace is a Special Agent from the DC headquarters and is there to monitor Garza’s unit as they attract attention. Garza tells him that he should have called first because he was busy, but he insists on joining them. He even offers her a ride so they can catch up.
Going to the office is a bit awkward. They haven’t spoken in a decade, and it’s clear that Garza thinks he’s on to something. Laura thinks Candace is shady because she’s rumored to be stepping on other agents to get her position at the agency.
Simone and Brandon scold Candace for judging her as she learns to compete in a man’s world. Simone says she’s interested in dating Candace, but Carter asks her to keep her distance.
At the office, Candace has a brief meeting with her former niece, Elena. Garza is called aside to take on a new job. The team watches a video of a billionaire who is desperate to find his daughter who has been missing for the past two days. The police could not answer him and he chose another option.
He offers ten million dollars to anyone who can get his daughter back. No questions asked and no tools required. As long as he gets his daughter back, he promises to protect the person who returned her.
Garza is worried that the ten million dollar bid will lead to hundreds of vigilantes trying to save the city. The girl in question is Brie Langham, and police believe her boyfriend, Jamison, is at work and are currently looking for her.
Candace calls Simon aside and tells her about the 50th anniversary of the first female special agent. He asks if Simone is ready to perform at the ceremony. Simone tells her she’ll think about it, she thinks Candace wants to reveal her identity. She’s a queer, black woman of a certain age, and so checks the box for most of the new identity the Bureau wants to associate with.
After meeting Candace, Carter updates her that there may be a chance the drug dealer isn’t their guy. He asks what the meeting with Candace is all about and tells her to tread carefully and play her cards right. Candace tries to recruit Simone and Garza tells Candace that Simone is free to choose her career path.
Meanwhile, Laura asks if Brie is hiding from her over-possessive father who thinks money solves everything. They get help from an unlikely source, Cleo, and obtain surveillance footage. The video leads them to Davis and they go to his last known address. Two of Brie’s kidnappers are found dead, but not Brie.
They regroup and change their approach to work. Their investigation leads them to the Tate Langham. He ordered the kidnapping of his sister in an attempt to take over the company. They arrest her, but they still have to find out who killed the kidnappers and who took Brie.
Cutty visits Simon at the office and he shows her around. He tells her about his concerns about the proposal from Candace. Her father tells her that he will understand. He then asks Garza’s opinion, and he bluntly tells him that the FBI won’t let him do things his way.
On the other hand, Mr. Langam receives a call from the new kidnappers, but he tells them that he will not pay the ten million. He just wanted Brie to vote for him to lead the company. With her son in jail, Brie doesn’t need her voice anymore and couldn’t care less what happened to her.
They convince him to turn on his partner, who shoots him and leaves him for dead. Laura and Garza turn to Tate for help and reveal that the kidnapper is out to kill their father. Mr. Langham has them locked up and they can’t find him.
Mr. Langham goes to see his mistress. He has a regular meeting with him every day. The kidnapper chases him there but escapes after the police shoot his father. They drive him down.
After the fight, Garza informs the team that Candace is holding a press conference to announce that Brie has been found. Candace wants to introduce Simone at a press conference, but Simone doesn’t feel comfortable being singled out. Candace is mad at him, but Carter is proud of him. Cutty is proud of him too.
Episode Review
It opened another eye to how the rich got what they wanted and the poor died trying to defend their rights. It’s frustrating how unfair life can be. I’m glad Simone addressed this without holding back. Unfortunately, talking about it and doing something to reduce these prejudices are two completely different things.
