Season 3 of Locke and Key begins with Bode, more whispers around the house, where he finds the key he’s been looking for to open the Harlequin chest in the basement. What are the odds, huh?
With this in hand, Kinsey leads Bode into the well and they express their concern about the broken bars on the window. They conclude that some kind of demon opened it. Alone, Kinsey sees Eden’s body at the bottom of the well.
Taking the picture, Kinsey shows it to her friends (minus Bodie and Kinsey) and they decide that getting the police involved is not an option. To get the ball rolling on their plan, the group manages to lift Eden out of the well and sing for him to pass.
After a lovely song, they unceremoniously dumped his body in the water, deciding it was the best option, possibly washing up on a beach further down the line and starting a major police investigation anyway. Sorry, getting ahead of ourselves here!
Back at Locke House, Bode talks to Nina and wants to use the Time Shift button to go back in time to see her father. Nina refuses, believing it to be a threat. Instead, he comes up with the idea of using the Master Key to revive his father’s memories.
Episode
Unfortunately, just before this, Bode lashes out at his mother, claiming that everyone has moved on and doesn’t care about Nina’s late father (admittedly, this kid gets angrier as the episodes progress).
Nina is quite patient with the child and brings him to the campfire where they reminisce about Rendell. Nina realizes that things are about to get bad and tells Bode to leave in a hurry. The truth is that Nina was a heavy drinker and she almost caused chaos with Bode. Sure enough, Rendell and Nina have a falling out thanks to the latter’s drinking, and he even misses Kinsey’s game.
Of course, as a result of the trip down memory lane, Nina freaks out and Bode comes to Kinsey for help. He tells Bode exactly what we’ve all been thinking (“don’t be such an a-hole”), but unfortunately, while Nina is stuck inside her own head, Bode finds the Time Button.
Kinsey walks in and is confronted by her mother, who demands to know what’s going on. Here, Nina admits the truth about her drinking and how harmful it is. Kinsey tells her mom not to relapse, pointing out that these bad memories aren’t helping anyone. Nina shakes off these concerns and points out that she has to deal with it. So Kinsey leaves.
As for Gideon and his cronies, they use the Anywhere key to buy a lot of clothes and equipment. Their latest plan is to get involved and see what they can do before Locke strikes when he least expects it. Part of this plan involves breaking up and taking old revolutionary weapons. When asked what they were doing, besides killing the duty secretary, of course.
Meanwhile, Tyler heads to the police station to follow up on a burglary report. Of course, none of them reported it, so the police have no record. Tyler confronts Kinsey and demands to know why she lied. It’s painful for Kinsey to accept, especially since he’s still trying to keep his promise and doesn’t reveal exactly what’s going on with the keys and magic.
As for Bode, he uses the Time Key and messes with the grandfather clock. It sets a timer for 5 minutes and skips back the time. Bode jumps to an important moment involving Dodge and Eden, Bode proudly proclaims how the future is being written and that they will be stopped.
Bode is, of course, an absolute idiot and changes the past through his ignorance. As time passes, he runs away from Dodge, but when he wakes up, Bode finds Dodge following him. He overpowers Boden, manages to take over his body, and traps the boy outside as his ghost. As Hermione Granger would say, “What a fool.”
To be honest, sometimes Locke and Key is frustrating to watch because the character decisions are ultimately the catalyst for all the bad things that happen.
Bode
Bode jumps back in time and mocks Dodge, probably one of the dumbest decisions any character has made in 3 seasons. Not only has Bode been pretty insufferable this year (he made his mom feel guilty for not putting up with Josh), but his time jumps have done irreparable damage to the timeline.
. So why does this change everything and not others? How bad can these timelines get? I said in the last recap that introducing time travel can be tricky, and without a solid writer at the helm, it can result in numerous plot holes. Unfortunately, this is the case here.
With Nina losing her memories and Tyler still struggling to piece his shattered memories back together, much of this season has seen busyness take center stage as he prepares for his final battle with Gideon. But by now it’s clear to see that Locke and Key are working through the fog. Let’s hope I’ve been proven wrong and future episodes pick up the pace.
