Episode 4 Review

Locke and Key Season 3 Episode 4 begins with Nina and Kinsey, Bode is different. The only person who realizes something is up is Gideon, who smiles under the light of the dancing flames and says, “here’s the other one.”

Anyway, Bode shows up at school, throws shade at Josh, and even leans a kid against a window and tells him he’s going to disembowel him.

Meanwhile, Carly arrives at the Locke house to check on Tyler. He didn’t bother texting her and obviously didn’t show up at work either. He is invited inside, where there is immediate tension between Tyler and Kinsey when he shows up and sees her in the kitchen. Unaware of this, Tyler decides to crash Carly for a while.

Bode stands up and immediately shows how different he is. Tyler just shrugs it off and pretends he’s weird and apologizes to Carly that he’s “not usually like that.” Bode even transforms into dark clothes. Surely the family would realize something was wrong by now, right?… Right? No, of course not.

Leaving for dinner with Josh, Bode continues to be rude and eat as much food as he can. But she is distracted by Gideon feeling left out. The couple meet and make a deal.

Gideon admits that he intends to use all the keys to open the portal and bring their world into it. If Dodge helps, he’ll be Gideon’s right-hand man.

Gideon also indicates that all the keys are in the locker, but when Bode/Dodge checks, they’re not there. However, he mentions the journal, including the word of the Alpha Key, which further disrupts the timeline, of course Dodge knows how Ty and the others won.

Elsewhere, Tyler reveals everything to Carly, including Jackie’s heartbreaking death as the reason he left the house. It puts everything into perspective as Carly talks about it with Kinsey, but also how great Tyler’s home life really is considering he’s surrounded by people who love him. Carly always thought he had a bit of a rough upbringing.

Roughly speaking, none of this family has figured out Bode’s secret yet, even Kinsey, who is talking to her brother, is dumbfounded as to why he demands to see the keys. Even when they curse him and claim that an enemy like Dodge can come back, the only one who understands is Rufus – and he’s back in just 30 seconds!

The pair wrestle, with Bode eventually defeating Rufus. He promises to hurt Ellie and Nina if they say anything, so Rufus decides to bite his tongue. When Rufus leaves – Bode’s threats ringing in his ears – he remains under guard and decides not to tell Ellie what happened.

Speaking of leaving, while Tyler is staying at Locke’s house, Carly decides to leave too. He sits down with Kinsey and asks her to tell him the truth. So he does. Behind this, Tyler changes his mind and decides he wants to know everything, and calls her to show him.

Kinsey goes down to the basement and grabs the Memory Key from his chest. But Bode happens to be watching and sees him open and reveal everything. As for Kinsey, she uses the Memory Key on Tyler and all the memories come back.

As for Nina, she walks into Bode’s room and sees Dodge’s body under her son’s bed. Nina is stunned when Dodge walks in and asks what he’s doing.

Silliness In Characters

Sometimes I wonder if these characters deserve their misfortune. Season 3 ramped up the silliness for most of our characters, including the entire Locke family, who still don’t understand Boden’s very obvious differences. He even almost says that Dodge is back!

Instead, everyone thinks Boden is just having an episode or going through a rough patch. Part of me wonders if Nina will figure out what happened to Bode in the next episode, even with the evidence in front of her.

It’s self-explanatory that only Rufus understands this. Anyway, Locke and Key wraps up its middle chapter with just enough short episodes to wrap up this final season, a sign of things to come.
