Friendzone is a lazy, cheesy romcom that messes up its premise, characters, and story. In fact, the funny thing about this movie is that the main character isn’t even in the friend zone.
What’s About This Film
In its simplest form, Friendzone is a film about the most important part of any relationship – communication. It’s a component that many romcoms take liberties with, playing on both misunderstanding and inability to express themselves properly. This is especially true when it comes to Thibault, the main character of Friendzone.
Thibault is a typical pushy nice guy on vacation for a bachelor party with his three best friends. She is sweet, sensitive and a bit of a pushover. Of course, he is very, very single. On their last night, he runs into Rose, the resident hottie and love interest. He recently broke up with his girlfriend and there are definite sparks between him and Titi. So far, so good.
As the pair grow closer, going out on nights out, watching movies, and Rose rubs her leg, Titi wrestles with her feelings and confides them to Rose. When Thibault thinks too long, Rose, still under the illusion that Titi likes her as a friend, returns with her ex. Titi’s friends are convinced she’s in the friend zone and try to help her win her back.
The only problem is that it’s Titi’s fault for not actually talking and not telling the truth in the first place. Instead, this elephant dances around for 90 minutes before being acknowledged, as the film weaves through nonsensical set pieces that encourage Titi to lie and pretend to be someone she’s not.
This movie isn’t helped by what is a fairly weak supporting cast, a lack of genuinely funny moments, and a sloppy story with little to get excited about. As far as romance movies go, this one is below average at best, and you’ll spot all the big twists a mile away.
Not A Memorable
Friendzone is unfortunately not a memorable movie. It’s a lazy, tired picture and relies so much on these characters not interacting with each other that you’ll find yourself more annoyed than anything else. It’s a shame because Rose and Titi have chemistry together, but with such a weak story, everything falls apart around her.
