Firefly Lane Season 2 Episode 4 begins with Johnny having a nightmare about Iraq. He wakes up startled and Kate reminds him not to miss Mara’s game. He says that he has not seen her much lately and is worried. He charms her and asks her to leave him alone.
He then drags Mara to his game and loses herself while watching. When Kate calms down, she talks to him about it and offers him to take her place. Maraya chooses to tell the news herself and takes him to the market. While there, he loses track of Marah, which scares him. Finally, he sees her buying earrings and hugs her, apologizing for letting her down.
Elsewhere, Tully’s videos on the Internet become a big hit, and she gets a call from her former boss for a date. During the meeting, he offers to drop the lawsuit against her and give her full creative control of the show. Tully rejects him and threatens to abandon the suit due to his past indifference.
She decided she wanted to do something different and got an idea after running into her mother’s Green Card husband naked in her kitchen. He tells Cloud that he wants to make a documentary about finding his father. Cloud immediately disagrees and tells her that she can’t go that way. Cloud refuses to explain why and tells her that he is leaving the apartment. Tully gets mad and lashes out at him for always leaving.
We finally get to see who was involved in this mysterious accident, and it turns out to be Tully.
1990
In the 90s, Tully was working at a television station hosting a morning show in New York, while Johnny and Kate were in the happy phase of their marriage. She plans to visit Tully New York and get away from home a bit.
While at work, Tully runs into Benedict Binswanger, who is on his show, but he asks another journalist for an interview. He claims he doesn’t remember her and their conversation is cut short because he has to go to another meeting.
When Kate visits New York, she and Tully have a great time, enjoying each other’s company and letting go of their worries. Kate thinks she is pregnant and is excited to give birth to another child, but unfortunately it turns out to be a false alarm.
They run into Benedict Binswanger at a restaurant and Tully goes to mock him for choosing another journalist to interview, but he walks in on her. He describes her poor upbringing almost in detail and calls her a sloppy journalist. Tully annoys him and doesn’t even let him clap before walking away.
1970
Tully and Kate start hanging out with their friends again, and Kate makes sure Tully joins the AV club. She asks to move in with Kate as Cloud brings home another boyfriend who is religious and doesn’t want to be around them. Cloud kicks her out after she tries to punish him for being drunk at a party.
At school, Tully, president of the AV club and Kate’s other friend, is not a fan of Lisa. She thinks Lisa is the boss, but Kate defends her. Kate also happens to love Eugene.
When he hosts the club’s film festival at his house, he gets a chance to get close to her. They come close to kissing, but Keith’s father stops them. The father is not happy about them getting drunk and trying to make up. She realizes that Kate is no longer her innocent Katie bear, and it breaks her heart.
Episode Review
It’s interesting to see how their friendship dynamic has remained the same over the years even though they’ve been apart. They’ve always been there for each other, so it’s interesting to see why an accident changes everything.
I’m glad Johnny decided to get help and deal with his PTSD. It’s also a good thing he’s moving. Maybe Kate can move on if she doesn’t see him 24/7.
I wonder why Cloud refuses to help Tully find his father, what is he afraid of? If Benedict Binswanger has anything to do with the mystery, perhaps his fears are well-founded. Also, will Tully stop after seeing how the subject has shaken her mother?
