The English Amazon Prime Show
Season 1
Episode Number 6 Preview And Review
At Powder River, a rider approaches Trafford’s winter haystack. He fires a flaming arrow, then kills those on his guard so that the straw burns.
Earlier, a man had warned Thin Kelly that there was something on Melmont’s side. A “thing” that does whatever Melmont wants it to do.
Even with this latest misfortune, Trafford is unwilling to give up. He wants to move his herd to Alberta, even though he knows Thin Melmont won’t allow it.
What does Sheriff Marshall discover about Billy Myers?
At Martha’s, the sheriff asks the widow for a photo of McClintock, Myers, and Flynn at Fort Fetterman. He notices an 1875 artifact from the Chalk River and is intrigued. When Myers learns that he was dishonorably discharged from the military, Red asks Morgan to find out why.
Red discovers that Myers and Flynn have been officially fired for illicit relationship but the firing was also linked to the unauthorized slaughter and scalping of Cheyenne Indians. Red is directed to an ex-prostitute named Black Widow to find out more.
Later, hearing Trafford branding his cattle on the left hind thigh, the sheriff has an idea. Looking at pictures of Myers and Flynn’s bodies, he realizes that the letter “B” written on them is not actually “B” but “TT” (along with the curve of the branding iron) – standing for “Thomas Trafford”. “
Why is Thomas Trafford’s arm branded?
Sheriff Marshall confronts Trafford about the brandings, and he admits to branding the men when he came to town. He hated their participation in the massacre at the Chalk River and their bravery in settling his land. But he did not kill them.
Trafford didn’t put the Melmont brand either. He and McClintock had already gone to Alamos to strike gold.
He then pulls up his arm to show the same brand. But it’s meant to be read as “DD”. Trafford received it because of his dishonorable discharge from the army.
He then reveals something about Hoxem: The Cheyennes call this area Odor. Melmont built the city on their graves after the massacre.
What disease does Cornelia have?
Eli takes Cornelia and White Bear to find help from a doctor. In a private meeting, he reveals what he already knows. He has syphilis. There are different stages of transmitted disease. It is hidden and sometimes does not come back. But hers did.
He knows what syphilis will do to him, what it has already begun to do to him. It will especially wear away the tissue and bones on the face. He lists more symptoms: blindness, deafness, insanity, death.
The Doctor gives him something to help him complete his mission, but he can’t save him from his fate.
How did Melmont kill Cornelia’s son?
When he sees Red Black Widow, he sees that her face is being eaten away by syphilis.
Cornelia explains to the doctor that her son was born with syphilis (because her syphilis was active when Melmont abused her). Syphilis was the cause of the child’s death at the age of 14.
He shows him a picture of his son, with scars on his face. The doctor does not move, but is moved by the mother’s love. This causes Cornelia to trust him. He decides to leave her money to invest in his business venture to create Flathead Jack’s Wild West Show. The condition is that he takes care of White Moon and sends her a picture when he turns 18.
Did Eli know about Cornelia’s syphilis?
In addition, Cornelia asks the doctor for a photo of her and Eli with their faces still unscarred. They take a picture and Cornelia says she has to tell Elin something.
Eli stops him. He already knows. This causes her to turn to face him as the doctor snaps the photo. Cornelia’s face is blurred in the edited photo.
Does Martha Myers have syphilis?
Eli and Cornelia then arrive to question Melmont and Billy Myers. They get word that Melmont isn’t there and that Myers is dead, so they visit Martha.
The sheriff is still with Martha. He asks her why she married Billy. She says Melmont got pregnant in Alamosa. When she met Billy, she had no choice.
They then see Slim Kelly walking towards them, but she falls to the ground from a gunshot wound. Eli, Cornelia and Red arrive; and they try to save Inca inside.
Eli McClintock notices the picture on the wall of Myers and Flynn – and Melmont is hiding under the frame, in Chalk River. Red reveals to everyone that he has syphilis from the house of a lady they went to. That’s why Flynn killed his wife. He didn’t have cowpox in his hands, but the syphilis he gave her.
Martha tells her son Jed to go outside, not wanting him to know he might be sick. He picks up a sword and angrily smashes the image before leaving, then goes outside to smash the sword against the pole.
Melmont was probably undercover when he slept with Martha, so he and Jed probably never contracted syphilis.
What is going on with McClintock and Trafford?
Suddenly, a horseman starts shooting at Marta’s house. They climb onto the roof and shoot at them. Eli rushes to confront McClintock, whose face is badly disfigured by syphilis.
McClintock is the one who helped Melmont by sabotaging Trafford. Eli fires at him, but the man escapes.
They later find McClintock’s body and also learn that Trafford died in the flood.
Who Kills David Melmont?
Before tracking down Melmont, Eli tells Cornelia that it’s not in her nature to kill, but she still can’t stop seeking revenge.
When he found Melmont, he bound the Jedi. The boy had tried to follow him with a broken sword.
Cornelia then shows Melmont the wounds on her chest. He claims he killed her. Why does the disease not accept him? Melmont says his own syphilis has come and gone.
Cornelia is furious about whether or not she killed her own child because of this disease.
Cornelia points her gun at Melmont, but he is undaunted. He moves forward to kiss the barrel of the gun. He says he can’t kill him. As long as he lives, a part of his son lives.
But Martha doesn’t care. He shoots Melmont. Eli finishes him off with a broken sword as Marta frees the Jedi.
Are Eli and Cornelia staying together?
After Melmont dies, Sheriff Marshall steps in. He knows someone has to be in charge or Melmont’s employees will revolt.
He will say that McClintock and Melmont died fighting each other. But he says that this story will only work if Eli leaves town for good.
But he must return to his home. He should at least see her before he lets her go.
Eli tells Cornelia that all she has to do is look at the stars to see if the monster is with Scorpio. This will never change.
They hug and he kisses her forehead. Eli sings as Cornelia walks away. “I love you,” said Pawnee.
How does “English” end?
The British advance 13 years to London in 1903. Cornelia returns home and she keeps many memories from her journey.
He is now covered with a black veil so that no one can see his scars. Flathead Jackson’s True Tales of the Wild West has arrived in Windsor, so he stops by to visit the now young White Moon.
White Moon tells her that she plays Eli in the show. Before they part, he lifts her veil to kiss her face, without pulling anything.
Episode Review
For such a sweeping and emotional drama, The English falls flat in its attempt to deliver a satisfying and heartwarming ending.
It’s almost as if the writers knew they wanted the series to end with a convoluted, imperfect ending, but they couldn’t find a reason to settle. Trafford’s death was quickly resolved off-screen, with the writers trying to make his character and Cornelia’s relationship matter, as if their love had already been cemented. (It wasn’t.)
The end of Cornelia and Eli’s relationship has less rhyme or reason. After emphasizing how they host each other, not enough reason is given for their separation. And the message from the first episode about what one wants and needs is never resolved, as neither Cornelia’s nor Eli’s fates need them.
The suspense of the finale will at least have you holding your breath, but its saving grace lies in Blunt and Spencer’s chemistry. There’s a tenderness to their separation that subverts the crude, lone-guard stereotype in Western romances. Cornelia and Eli, along with the amazing visuals of the series, make the British worth watching.
