Series Review
Girl and the Astronaut looks like an average blast at the theme park with a 2 hour wait. You stand in line, patiently move forward and hope that the detours and boring, repetitive scenery will be worth it in the end. Then you finally get on and it falls apart.
Netflix’s new Polish sci-fi series isn’t just a bad sci-fi show, it’s a bad TV show. It’s a slow, laborious show of mediocrity, with faint whispers of something more exciting on the horizon. Unfortunately, this never materializes, and worse, the ending actually hurts the characters even more, not just with a cliffhanger ending, but with an incredibly few character choices that believe in beliefs
In the not-too-distant future, a Polish astronaut named Niko, lost in Earth’s orbit thanks to brand new invisibility radar technology, suddenly reawakens after 30 years of hibernation. . When he returns to Earth, officials struggle to determine what happened to Nico and why he hasn’t aged a day.
With Nico passed out and attached to machines, the second part of this story returns to 2022 as we follow an unconventional love triangle between three toxic characters who really should be doing something better in their spare time. Marta bounces back and forth between Bogdan and Niko, the two pilots play them like fiddles, she bounces back and forth between the two boys, she’s torn between the people she really loves.
At the same time, this story is also set up with unnecessary scenes showing the inevitable space launch, the two boys competing and trying to better the other. All this, together with the love triangle itself, simply repeats what we know according to the 2052 chart.
Interesting Tale
There’s definitely potential here for an interesting tale similar to something like Glitch or The 4400, where characters return after a long absence and try to pick up the pieces of their lives. Unfortunately, Girl and the Astronaut has none of that. Not only does the plot become a boring slog of repetitive scenes and annoying diversions, it moves at an absolute snail’s pace. I wouldn’t be surprised if people reached for the fast forward button on this one, but honestly, even if you did, you wouldn’t be missing much.
Unlike a show like Velma that’s so bad you’d be sick to see the show’s subsequent regurgitation, Girl and the Astronaut is just eye-wateringly boring. And this is perhaps even worse. The show won’t be remembered for long and will unfortunately find its way into the “Worst TV Shows of 2023” article!
