Episode Recap
The Outer Banks Season 2 Episode 9 begins with Papa’s last-second derailment. With the cross now on the ground, the group works together to move it.
The gold is too heavy though, and for the Pope his journey comes to an unceremonious end.
The kids run to Ricky, unable to hide the cross yet, and try to get him medical attention. Adrenaline from the syringe coursing through his veins brings him back to his fighting spirit. Papa’s energetic enthusiasm eventually causes the car to spin on the road and crash.
As the gang realizes the cross has been taken, a truck passes by with Rafe and Renfield inside. The Limbreys have a history of this as we know it, but the Pope is determined to break this rotten curse. He retrieves the cross and calls the children to join him.
Limbrey finally crosses his arms and half-opens a compartment. Opens the switch using the key…nothing. Renfield tries to double-cross Limbrey, but he coolly knocks him out. This gives Rafe the opportunity to take the gun and try his luck with Limbrey.
The children are stopped by the police on the way and the children are taken home. Kiara’s parents give their daughter an ultimatum – no more treasure hunting or she will go to the Blue Ridge. For now, he has a big decision to make.
The rest of the kids see the truck outside and come over to Rafe. While Rafe is inside, Sarah rushes in and enlists Wheezie’s help to grab the keys. Unfortunately, he first checks the back of the truck and sees Renfield’s body. As Sara begins to panic, Rafe grabs her sister and locks her inside.
Rafe drives off in his truck and makes Papa get in the back. When he stops and drags Renfield’s body into the water, Pope tries to stop him, but ends up forcing himself to run into the swamps.
Well, Papa calls Kie and asks for her help. He finally decides to leave, but spends the whole night packing up and leaving. Honestly, the editing here is really weird. Or is that editing crap? Either way, Kie is well aware that his departure now means he’s headed to Blue Ridge.
All the guys go to the docks and create a distraction, exploding gas canisters to attract all the workers. While doing this, the group climbs into a shipping container and holds on tight. Well, this container, in turn, is taken to a ship that heads out to sea.
Sarah wakes up to find herself on this boat with no one but Ward for company. He is alive!
Episode Review
I know this is played as a big reveal, but Ward Cameron feels like faking his own death and making a big scene in front of everyone. At least that part of his character is consistent! Seeing Ward back is definitely a good way to end the episode and leaves the door open for where this could go next.
Meanwhile, the kids all continue their treasure hunt, but this time they find themselves in a shipping container bound for parts unknown. While Ward Cameron is the true antagonist of the series, there hasn’t been enough of a threat or backstory to really invest in what he’s trying to do with Limbrey.
In some ways, her character is very reminiscent of Katherine Marlowe in Uncharted 3. For the uninitiated, this old lady had similar plans, but didn’t really serve much of a threat or purpose outside of some snappy lines of dialogue.
Either way, this second season has been a decent enough watch, but it also has less forgiving accolades than the first.
